What Is the Parable of the Talents Meaning?

by Nicolette Kerner

Understanding the Parable of the Talents meaning can be life-changing. This parable gives a biblical insight as to how God feels about talent itself. Most people don’t realize that they have so much more to offer than they believe. God wants us to use the blessings and the talents that we have. No matter how big or small, they will make a lasting impact on the world.

Since I heard about this Parable the other day, I could not stop thinking about it. Therefore, I thought I needed to go ahead and share it with you, with hopes of passing this message along to someone who needs it.

The Parable of the Talents…

This parable tells a story of a man leaving on a long trip. Before leaving he approached three of his servants, he gave one 5 bags of silver, the other 2 bags of silver, and the third servant 1 bag of silver. He specifically gave each of the servants their portion based on their abilities. Afterward, he left the servants to go on his long trip.

So what did the servants do?

The first servant who was given 5 bags of silver used that to invest and double his silver. He now had 10 bags of silver. The second servant who was given 2 bags of silver worked hard and also doubled his silver. He now had 4 bags of silver. The last servant who received 1 bag of silver buried his bag in the ground. He still had one bag of silver.

After a while, their Master returned and asked them what they had done with the silver he had given them.

Servant One…

The first servant told him he had doubled his 5 bags of silver, and the Master was excited and praised him. He told him that he was faithful in handling the 5 bags of silver and stated that he would give him more.

Servant Two…

The second servant told him that he had also doubled his 2 bags of silver. The Master was again excited and praised this servant. He told him he had been faithful in handling the 2 bags of silver and now he will entrust him with more responsibilities and wanted to celebrate with him.

Servant Three…

The last servant told his Master that he knew that he was a harsh man. The servant accused him of harvesting crops that he had not planted. He told his Master that he was afraid of losing his money so he buried it. He then proceeded to hand his money back. The Master’s response was very different from his responses to the other two servants. He stated that the servant was lazy and wicked and asked why he hadn’t at least put the money in the bank to gain interest. He then ordered that his 1 bag of silver be given to the servant who now had 10 bags of silver.

The Master proclaimed that those who use what they are given will be rewarded with more than what they had started with. They would have an abundance. Those who do not use what they are given will lose it no matter how small.

So what is the Parable of the Talents Meaning?

The Parable of the Talents meaning is to teach people to use what God has given them and he will reward them. We often find ourselves wanting more, praying for more, or trying to gain more while we are holding on to what we do have. Holding back on your talents and using statements like “if this happens then I will…” or “once I have x-amount of money, time, etc _______ then I will do this…” is not why God gave you what you already do have.

God wants us to use what he has blessed us with for good. He purposefully gave us the talents and opportunities that he did for a reason. He wants us to use what we have now whether it’s as small as showing up and being kind to someone or as big as helping someone out of debt. God doesn’t measure in size he measures in faithfulness, in heart, and in love.

God wants you to invest your talents into something, he does not want you to sit on your talents and waste them. He has a plan for everyone, and not one person’s plan is the same as another.

I personally am guilty of dreaming these grand dreams and praying for God to make them happen. But in reality, God has already given me the abilities and tools to make these dreams come true. It’s actually up to me to use them and make it happen.

The Moral of the Parable of Talents is to not let your abilities and dreams go to waste because you are waiting for something else to happen. If you want something, God needs to see you using what you have in front of you before he knows that you can handle more.

One of my favorite sayings is that God will not give us anything we cannot handle. If our plates are already full with the little bit that he has blessed us with, how are we to expect him to give us more?

It can be simple, if you want to become a Division I athlete, go practice more. Do you want to start a blog? Write a blog post. If you want to get into vlogging, use your phone to video. Use what you have right now to help you get to where you want to be.

Final Thoughts…

It is never too late to achieve what you want. God is always with you and he loves everyone. No matter your circumstances, no matter how hard it seems to be, God has a plan. It is up to us to make God proud in our own ways. We may not understand the path that he has for our life or the plan he has created, but when we have faith and follow, everything will always work out in the end.
