The kitchen remodeling average cost can be extremely expensive if you’re trying to start from scratch. The good news is that there are several ways you can make your remodeling costs much lower and just as beautiful!
Below I have compiled a list of ways you can spend less but still look expensive. Trust me your bank accounts will appreciate you after trying some of these tips and tricks!
WAIT… YOU MUST KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU START…
When you’re getting into a massive home remodel, it can become overwhelming very quickly. Before we tackle any money-saving tips, I HIGHLY recommend that you take a breather and listen to what I’m about to say…
“IT WILL BE OKAY… You need to know, it will be stressful, and crazy, and not everything is going to go as planned. BUT… IT WILL BE OKAY!!”
Now that we got that disclaimer out of the way… Check out some of my favorite money-saving tips for remodels below!
New Appliances … CHA-CHING $$
So you want to have that stunning professional range because you are a stellar cook, and want to have the best possible equipment right… Then you go and get prices, or have someone price it out for you, and you end up crying because the one you want could be a down payment on a house. BUMMER.
Good news… This is the part where I encourage you to take a page out of my mother’s book. This woman is an AMAZING baker (No, really she should own a bakery, but that’s a story for another time.) and just recently had her kitchen remodeled. She dreamed of having a professional-grade range and oven, but when she looked at the pricing almost puked because they were around $11,000.00.
Now, don’t get me wrong my mom bakes so much she would get the full $11,000 out of it but it just wasn’t in the budget.
The best part…
WELL LET ME TELL YOU… MY MOTHER IS A GENIUS! She asked the professional who was working on the wall to add a second gas hookup and decided to buy two full-sized gas ovens for only $800.00 each.
This brought her total to $1,600.00 for the new appliances instead of $11,000.00.
But that’s not even the best part… by doing that, she actually ended up getting a couple of extra burners, and two full-sized ovens. If she had paid the $11,000.00 she would have gotten fewer burners, one regular and one small oven, and for a heck of a lot more money. So the moral of this story… don’t be afraid to try something different, it will probably work out.
Cabinets can add to the Kitchen Remodeling Average Cost… Trust Me…
Cabinets can be outrageously expensive! They go based on material, size, quantity, etc. Replacing them can cost THOUSANDS of dollars not to mention the amount of time it takes to have them built or ordered can vary too. On average it can cost anywhere between $6,000.00 to $10,000.00 just to replace cabinets. Mind you this figure is just to purchase the cabinets, it does not include installation or delivery.
Some tips you can use to get around spending another several thousand dollars on cabinets, plus save a bunch of money, are listed below:
- Take the doors off to sand and resurface them.
- Add molding to the doors if they are flat.
- Change out the handles and hinges.
- Re-paint them.
- Re-stain them.
- Upgrade the hinges to be soft-close.
Doing small changes like the ones listed above can make all the difference. Small things like changing the handles can literally change the entire look of the kitchen. In fact, that’s one of my favorite things to change to help transform the kitchen. I’ve used this trick several times in base housing and rental properties! Check out some of these options from Amazon below.
Countertop Blues adding to the Kitchen Remodeling Average Cost?
So now that we’ve talked about the cabinets… naturally we need to address the countertops. While granite countertops look stunning and can really change the look of a kitchen, they also add a LARGE CHUNK to the kitchen remodeling average cost.
Instead of being dead set against exploring other options, I HIGHLY encourage that you at least look around. There are several other options that are just as, if not more, durable compared to granite. Try exploring things like Quartz, Concrete, Laminate, Sealed Wood, or others. You can find the same look in “Manufacturer’s Specials” for a lot cheaper than picking a natural stone too.
For those of you renting, you can also use contact paper over the counters to give them a completely different look as well. Actually, a lot of Military Spouses choose to do that in base housing!
Flooring Thoughts!
Flooring can be very similar to countertops in the aspect that you need to shop around.
Some things to consider when choosing a floor are:
- Pets?
- Location of flooring. (Meaning kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, etc.)
- Are there kids?
- How much traffic there will be on the flooring?
Things like location matter because you don’t want to choose an expensive wood floor for a kitchen and then, later on, have something happen like a fridge leak. Then you end up wasting A LOT of money on the floor because it warped.
For a kitchen remodel look into things like the new luxury vinyl flooring that can handle things like scratches, water, and high traffic wear and tear. The other positive about vinyl is that it is much more cost-effective and can be easily repaired and or replaced later on.
Additional Tips to Help Cut Your Kitchen Remodeling Average Cost Down…
Other tricks that you can use to save money are small things like changing light fixtures and light switch covers. Try adding a fresh coat of paint to change the color scheme of the kitchen too.
You would be amazed by what changing an island light can do! I linked my kitchen island light that I bought on Amazon here.
Other options you can choose are things like peel and stick backsplashes, opting for a mobile island instead of paying for island cabinets, or solving storage issues like the Tupperware organizer tip I shared in my 10 Home Life Hacks That Will Blow Your Mind post.
Final Thoughts…
As you can see there are so many different hacks and tips you can use to lower your kitchen remodeling average cost. My final and probably biggest money-saving tip I can give you is to do the work yourself if possible. There are so many resources available for free that you can explore to learn something new. Use resources like YouTube, Pinterest, Google, etc. to find answers to your questions or tutorials for new projects.
As stressful as remodeling can be when it’s done you will be so proud of the work that you have completed. Feel free to share any additional ideas or tips for remodeling projects, I love reading your comments. Don’t forget… IT WILL BE OKAY!
