Different Ideas On Decorating Christmas Trees!

When it comes to making your tree look like it jumped right off Pinterest, the first step is to figure out what direction you want your tree to go in! There are a million different options, so be sure to choose what direction best fits your home and style.

Different ideas on decorating Christmas trees can include but are not limited to…

  • Candy Themed
  • Traditional Red and Green Themed
  • Winter wonderland Themed
  • Food Themed
  • Disney Themed
  • An all-Silver Theme
  • An all-Gold Theme
  • Blush and Gold Themed
  • Rainbow Themed
  • Farmhouse Themed
  • An all-Purple Theme

The list can go on and on…

Nobody likes throw-up… Cohesiveness is KEY!

To make your tree stand out and give you that breathe taking vibe, whatever you decide, it has to be cohesive! I don’t care if you decide to make the entire front of your tree purple, and then the entire back of it silver. Maybe your tree placement is in the middle of two different rooms. If you’re trying for two different looks in one tree, you don’t know, it might work. It can even be a tree full of unicorns. Seriously, whatever floats your boat. But, for visual purposes, you have to make sure it flows together.

Things you can do to make sure your tree is cohesive can include easy stuff like sticking to 3 or 4 colors that look good together. Or you can go with a specific theme like one of the listed ones above. The main thing is, you don’t want your tree to look like you just threw up a bunch of random stuff all over it. You don’t want the decor to not have a purpose. For example, you don’t want to have a pizza slice ornament paired with super sparkly flowers, and then add a bunch of dogs. None of that flows because they don’t have anything in common, and they don’t match…

If you’re going for a more Pinterest-style type of look, the lack of cohesiveness will throw off your entire vision!

Side note…

Please do not take offense to anything in this post if you DO have a tree full of different items. The most important thing is that they mean something to you. The purpose of this post is to help someone who is looking for ideas on decorating Christmas Trees in a way that looks like it belongs on Pinterest. What is being described in this post is more for decor purposes and not nostalgia.

Covering the Basics…

Something I should mention before getting into the decor, you want to make sure that you start with a good base. Make sure you have a tree that you are happy with. Whether you have a real or fake tree it’s important to like the base you are building off of, it’s like a house, it’s important to start with good bones! Here are some links to some gorgeous trees if you are looking for fake trees. The tree pictured in the photos of this post is the brand National Tree Company for reference.

A quick tip for those who do not have a pre-lit tree… Instead of having to spend a hot minute wrapping string lights around your tree, an easy hack is to use the outdoor netted lights instead. Check out these lights I found on amazon that would work great on your tree. Plus, they’ll save you a bunch of time and effort!

Ornaments Ideas on Decorating Christmas Trees!

Once you’ve figured out what look you are trying to achieve, finding the right ornaments will be the next step. When looking for ornaments follow these guidelines…

  • Use Different sizes
  • Play with Different Textures
  • Look for Different shapes (Unless you are sticking to all classic ball ornaments.)

For the ornaments that may have meaning or be special to you, if you still want to include them on the tree, you absolutely can! If you find that they don’t go with your theme/color scheme, an easy fix is to place those ornaments towards the back. Placing the off-themed ornaments in the back is a little hack that allows you to know your special pieces are still displayed. However, it also allows you to make your tree as spectacular as you envisioned!

Additional Ornament Advice…

As I was hinting above, give yourself a variety of ornaments, instead of using all the same size, all the same shape, etc. If you change it up it will give the eye something to look at and people will find your tree interesting. You should know though, it’s absolutely okay to have several of the same ornament as long as you spread them out across your tree!

Along with little things like changing up the size and playing with different textures, there are other ways you can add depth to your tree too. Something else you can try is to add some larger ornaments almost tucked into the branches. By taking up more space towards the center of the tree it helps to create the illusion of your tree being fuller than it is.

BIG TIPS for Ideas on Decorating Christmas Trees…

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO GO BIG, even if you don’t have a larger tree! The fuller the tree the better it looks, UNLESS you have a flocked tree. If you have a beautiful, flocked tree, you may want to showcase the tree more so in that case, you don’t have to cover fill the tree as much! As long as you don’t have a bunch of random blank spaces all over the tree you are golden!

It’s all in the details…

Once you’ve added the ornaments that you want, now you can have a little extra fun and go to town with the finishing touches. This is where the ribbons, sprigs, pics, tree skirts, and toppers come in. Like I was talking about earlier, having different textures is great and things like pics and ribbons can help you to achieve that goal.

I love to add pics all over my tree because it gives off a 3D kind of effect. Again it creates a texture that is great for visual purposes. It’s also a really beautiful look when ribbon is added. The ribbon helps to fill those spaces that you don’t necessarily know what to do with. Which is great!

Ribbon Trick…

The key to having the ribbon placed perfectly is to actually cut medium to short-sized pieces and place them on the tree individually. Just tuck in both ends and it gives the illusion that your ribbon is wrapped throughout your tree!

The Finishing Touches…

The final touches are your tree topper, and to dress the very bottom of your tree. For your tree topper, you have options. It doesn’t always have to be a star or angel on top, consider adding a large bow or create your own piece using different pics and sprigs like those pictured throughout this post!

As for the very bottom of your tree, you also have options. There are beautiful cloth skirts, you could use a throw blanket, or there are tin and wicker pieces too! Just remember the bottom piece is like the mascara for your tree. You don’t want to have this gorgeous eye look and then forget the lashes, that would be terrible! The tree skirt has the uncanny ability to take your tree to the next level!

Final thoughts…

Don’t be afraid to jump out of your comfort zone and get creative! Be bold, trust your gut, and experiment! The worst that could happen is you don’t like it and just have to take it off the tree.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing is to remember to have fun and enjoy the holiday season. This is a time of year to celebrate Jesus and be with family and friends! What is your favorite holiday? Do you love to decorate for Christmas as much as I do? Don’t forget to comment below your beautiful creations, I would love to see them all! Happy Holidays!
